Now a sport played and appreciated by millions, the game of rugby began on the Close at Rugby School in 1823 when William Webb Ellis first took the ball in his arm and ran with it. And it is just over the road from the close, in the shadows of the picturesque Rugby School and in full-view of the Close, where the Merchants Inn can be found. At The Merchant's you will find great beer, great food and great times all in a traditional English pub setting. The pub is the current Rugby CAMRA pub of the year and Warwickshire CAMRA pub of the year - which it has won twice in recent years. We are also The Rugby Observer 'Best Licensed Outlet' and have been since we opened! We are conveniently situated close to Rugby town centre and are only a 10 minute walk from Rugby railway station. As you will learn from the website and by visiting the pub, we are passionate about beer. With up to 10 cask ales available at any time plus real ciders and perry's and draught and bottled Belgian beers, there is plenty to choose from ... This passion for beer is emphasised by the massive amount of breweriana displayed in the pub. In fact it is one of the biggest collections in the whole of the UK. Breweriana is essentially the collection of absolutely anything and everything related to breweries, both old and new. With the help of groups like The Brewery History Society, the collection of breweriana we continue to amass pays homage to what is really a national art - brewing. Always try to take a minute to have a look at the breweriana in the pub, especially as we try and rotate it as often as possible. Also look out for information regarding our two annual beer festivals in October and April, live music (Tuesday nights are a must), and various other entertainment that we dream up in between pulling pints!
